If you’re a leader of a tech company or if you develop one of these new AIs or powerful algorithms, you should be aware that you are not developing a new product. You are changing history. These technologies will change everything. Our economics, our culture, our politics, and you should take responsibility for the impact of these powerful new agents that you’re summoning. And for that, it’s not enough to understand computer science and marketing. You also need to understand things like psychology and history and politics and even religion. Because they are all going to be impacted by these powerful new technologies, these powerful new agents.
And when you think about the potential consequences of the technology you develop, don’t think only about what you want to do with it. Think about maybe the politician you most fear in the world, and take a few minutes or a few hours or a few days to think what would that person do with the technology that I’m developing. And if you don’t want to take this responsibility, you are in the wrong business. If you don’t want to take into account the political and cultural and social consequences of the technology you are developing, don’t develop it.
