We recently shared the news that an astronomy workshop class at the University College London Observatory made the fluke discovery of a new supernova, now cataloged as SN 2014J, in nearby bright galaxy M82 (aka the Cigar Galaxy).

Supernova SN 2014J is one of the closest to be seen in recent decades and is now the brightest part of M82 and visible in small telescopes in the evening sky.
