“Gay Jesus”

British singer and gay icon Elton John has courted controversy this week by claiming in an interview that “Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man.”

“Even popes need to be careful what they wish for. Three months ago, Pope Benedict gathered hundreds of painters, singers, sculptors, writers, actors and poets into the Sistine Chapel and called on them to ponder the ‘harmony between the journey of faith and the artist’s path,’ and to consider ways to use their art and their platforms for God. Elton John wasn’t in attendance, but he apparently got the message. As reported in Reliable Source, in an upcoming issue of Parade, Elton John used his celebrity to advance his unconventional theology: ‘I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you’re as good as dead.’ Elton John is hardly the first celebrity to make controversial claims about the son of God…”
