“2010 was the year that removed all doubt that cybersecurity is now a geopolitical problem.” As reflections on the WikiLeaks saga turn into prognosticating about the future of cyber-security, so begins an op-ed in today’s International Herald Tribune that offers a set of potential scenarios around how Julian Assange’s arrest might turn him into a cyber-martyr and inspire hackers to become terrorists. Furthermore, Western corporations may be further targeted for their complicity with governments in curbing WikiLeaks’ transaction, thus driving them even closer to governments. The op-ed was co-authored with Ian Bremmer, President of the political risk advisory firm Eurasia Group, and concludes that “In 2010, WikiLeaks pushed freedom of information to a whole new level. We can only imagine the implications we’ll see in 2011.”
