Marvin Gaye (1939-1984) was an American soul singer and songwriter. He was a pillar of the classic Motown sound with hit singles like “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” He later separated from his production company and recorded some of his most acclaimed work, including the albums What’s Going On and Let’s Get It On. Gaye was tragically shot dead by his father in April 1984. His legacy is that of one of the most influential R&B singers in American history.
